Owning Hamsters and Cats?

So, Can I have a Hamster and a Cat?

The answer is maybe! Some cats and Hamsters can live peacfully with each other. If you cat has a low prey drive and is not allowed ina certain room, its complatly possible to get a hamster (Make sure this room is big enough to fit a least a 30 gallon tank or cage that has a floorspace of at least 450 square inches. Hammies might be little, but they need a lot of room!)

Tip one: As a person that has owned hamsters and cats, I think it is crutial to have your hammy in a high place, like a desk or stand. This will help prevent interaction between the hamster and the cat.

Tip two: Make sure your cat is never introduced to your hamster. It might be tempting to let the two meet and become friends. Trust me, this will end with a dead hamster. Cats, even with low prey drives (read my article about prey drive to learn more) will still be tempted to take a bite out of your hammy.

Tip three: Make sure to close the door when you are socializing with your hamster. This will just make it safer, even if the cat never goes into the room, they will eventually smell the hamster.

Tip four: Never leave a cage door open. If your hamster escapes, there is a 95% chance your cat will find it before you do.
